Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate the operational, administrative and medical environment within which sleep physicians currently diagnose patients with sleep disorders, and develop a support system that would more efficiently gather patient history data, and so improve the effectiveness of patient-physician consultations, the diagnoses, and patients' self-management of any subsequent treatment plans. Sleep disorders are a significant and growing problem, both for the economy of the nation and for the physical and psychological well-being of individual sufferers. Physicians who deal with sleep disorders, and their administrative support staff and facilities, are under constant pressure to find more efficient ways of dealing with the backlog of patients. The investigation examined how online tools could help both patients and physicians. Such tools help patients by encouraging them to provide more-detailed data about their symptoms, by supporting them in gaining self-knowledge, and by ensuring that their concerns are not overlooked. Online tools can help physicians by enhancing the quality of information available to them, by allowing them to quickly assimilate patient information, and by providing them with an objective second opinion of a diagnosis based on established criteria for sleep disorders. The projects objectives-of devolving the responsibility for form filling from the physician to the patient, and giving the patient access to sleep disorder specific questions earlier in their interaction with the sleep investigation unit-were met. This will aid patients in their self-discovery of their own sleep disorder information, as the literature shows that a more knowledgeable patient receives a more personalised consultation and is better able to comply with treatment plans. It will aid physicians by presenting them with relevant patient information within the natural workflow of a consultation, and in a format that the physicians finds useful.
