In the Absence of Grief
Australasian Death Studies Network Conference - Death, Dying and the Undead: Contemporary approaches and practices, 2nd (Noosa, Australia, 02-Sep-2016)
2016
Abstract
Saying goodbye at the airport, trying to understand suicide, loss of mobility, loss of a baby and loss of a hoped for future are just some of the experiences that can bring emptiness, a sense of futility, darkness, pain, and grief. These life experiences are explored, and compiled, as a collection of creative stories and poems in the 2014 anthology, Grieve: Stories and Poems for Grief Awareness Month 2014. Death and dying are a key component of many, although not all, of these stories. The compilation resulted from submissions to the Grieve Writing Competition, which was initiated by the Hunter Writer Centre and sponsored by a number of invested partners including the Australian Funeral Director’s Association, Good Grief, and the NALAG centre for Grief.
The importance of Grief, as it relates to death and dying, is signified by the shared vision of this partnership, the calibre of judges and prizes awarded for the competition and the continued use of ‘Grief’ as the central theme of the, now annual, competition.
Parallel to both the competition and conference themes, the aim of the following creative piece, is to ‘share an experience of grief in the hope that perhaps a little of the darkness may be lifted and some of the pain elevated.’ (Hunter Writer Centre 2014). Additionally alongside the concept of grief itself, the taboos associated with the absence of it, in the face of death, is explored within the text.
