Abstract
This presentation will report on the progress of our LTGS that is set to roll out for Sem 2 2014 through Session 1 2015 (and will be well underway by the time of L&T Week 2014!). We are developing a number of learning objects to be used by our Anatomy and Physiology students as a means to complement and enhance their lecture experience here at USC. Through the addition of snippets, mini-lectures and other objects, the lecture material will be available to students in more forms, enriching their theoretical experience in two traditionally large volume courses. Material will be developed in smaller bite sized pieces for students to view and engage with-5-20min experiences occurring 5 or 6 times, rather than a single 2hour lecture. The project has two major aims: first to: investigate the time involved by academics to create and implement these new initiatives and a how-to manual that chronicles the work involved and paves the way for future researchers. Secondly, the perceived usefulness of these objects as reported by students and the uptake of these objects by students through analysis of hits online. Students will be surveyed three times throughout the semester using minute papers to maximize response rates. To further capture student perceptions about who uses the new (and old) material and how these objects are used, focus group interviews will be held at the completion of semester The latter will provide insight into what was appreciated or disliked and areas for future development. As we are midway through this project, we will discuss our experiences to date with the development of these resources, show what we have produced to date, and reflect on the amount of work involved to achieve them. The project commenced using Adobe Captivate for the creation of learning objects. As we gained experience, we needed to branch out into other programs as we found inefficiencies between the products used and the outcomes we desired. We shall also report on the preliminary qualitative findings from the initial survey/s about how students access the lecture materials currently here at USC for Anatomy and Physiology, and how they are using the new objects.
