Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education study abroad students academic transition
The Study Abroad program is one of USC's strongest for International student intake. Many of these students are from Europe and have English as a second or additional language. As these students return to home institutions and continue their studies after one semester in Australia, little is known about the impact their study experience has had on their skill development. Initial findings will be presented from a research project completed in Germany, which explores the academic transition experience of a group of Study Abroad students having completed their studies at USC in 2010. In-depth interviews and surveys were conducted to gain rich experiential data about the strategies that these Study Abroad students use to develop their writing skills and adapt academically to assessment requirements. There has been a recent push for Australian universities to internationalise course design and provide effective support for International students. As written assessment is the fundamental driver of student learning in Australian universities, International students are often faced with a lack of familiarity with the academic writing protocols expected of them. Little research has focused specifically on the unique academic experience of Study Abroad students, who experience different pressures in that they are required to adapt more quickly to the Australian context to be academically successful. The findings from this project will be shared and some future implications for change at USC will be discussed along with findings about the impact for the returning international students.
