Abstract
The caravanning and camping industry is substantial in Australia, turning over more than $1.4 billion per year. Strong and steady growth in the industry since 2012 is predicted to continue into the near future. Despite its popularity as a form of outdoor recreation, most Australian data about caravanning and camping is in the form of industry reports focused on demographics with little empirical investigation into the perceptions and experiences of those who caravan or camp. To address this gap, this paper presents the preliminary, qualitative findings of a national survey of 357 Australian caravaners and campers. Using manual thematic analysis, it was found that ‘being outdoors/with nature’, ‘fun/excitement’ and ‘relaxing/enjoyment’ were top-of-mind for consumers with positive, memorable experiences typically associated with being at a specific location while negative, memorable experiences referred to inclement weather and antisocial behaviour of others at a site. This empirical study contributes to the limited stock of knowledge regarding Australian caravaners and campers and provides useful preliminary insights for the industry.
