Abstract
Engaging students when the topic is difficult is a common problem academics face. In Psychology, Physiological Psychology is typically considered dull and difficult by students and even staff. Integratingactive learning principles and novel activities encourages students to engage with the material in this "hard",second year undergraduate unit. For example, Brain Bingo and Terminology Hangman were designed to facilitate learning the extensive terminology. Brain Bingo was evaluated with pre and posttests, and findings were replicated in Psychology 101. Results showed improved recall for the terminology, and student surveyresponse data provides evidence that students find these activities engaging and helpful. The underlyingcognitive principles of the activities and the applicability of these ideas to other disciplines are discussed.
