Encouraging early aspirations into STEM using hands-on approaches to learning
STEM Teacher Symposium, 2022 (Gold Coast, Australia, 22-Sep-2022 - 23-Sep-2022)
Queensland Department of Education
2022
Abstract
The Make, Integrate and Explore Lab project with schools, focuses on building the capacity of teachers to integrate curriculum with real world STEM challenges and providing students with early positive STEM experiences.
The School programs have been designed by teachers for teachers, linked to curriculum and using problem based pedagogies and hands-on inquiry-based activities. The teacher PD and lessons in schools have been delivered to over 3500 students and teachers since 2019 and the Year 6 program was part of a quantitative case study, which explored male and female aspirations in STEM.
The School’s initiative is intended to garner interest in STEM subjects at school, encourage future transition into tertiary studies and broaden STEM career aspirations of students in years 4 – 10, who attend schools in regional areas.
All teaching resources in the Schools program are available at no cost from our website https://mielab.edu.au/ for educators to utilise. Come along and learn more from schools who have engaged in our program and the outcomes of our research.
