Foundation and Bridging Educators New Zealand (FABENZ) Challenges & Innovation Conference, 2014 (Tauranga, New Zealand, 04-Dec-2014–05-Dec-2014)

Abstract
This roundtable discussion will focus on the notion of ‘digital futures’ and the prospect of shifting technologies andabundance of information in higher education that can create challenges for students and teaching staff in computerliteracy courses for bridging programs. Updating and constantly changing applications or skills in the information andcommunications technology fields often means students have to adapt to new forms of technology and software manytimes across their studies in higher education. We acknowledge the ambiguity and uncertainty of knowledge andtechnology in these ‘new times’ yet, information, knowledge, and culture are central to human freedom and humandevelopment. How they are produced and exchanged in our society critically affects the ways we see the state of theworld as it is and might be in the future. What are the spaces and pedagogies that may serve the needs of students, higher education and specifically enabling and bridging programs for tomorrow? At the University of the SunshineCoast we have taken an innovative approach to teaching Computer Literacy, moving away from the traditional skillsbased curriculum to create resilience in the use of new applications and technologies and to have students question thevery meaning of ‘digital futures’. This discussion will produce ideas of best practice examples of using technologies inbridging courses and beyond and to fundamentally ascertain, what does ‘digital futures’ mean for higher education?
