Abstract
Globally higher education is called on to provide work ready graduates, who have received a high quality of education delivered in flexible ways to be ready for an uncertain future. Disruption is now a common phenomenon in many industries such as journalism, design and health promotion. Educators are being called on to be innovative in their response and prepare graduates who are able problem-solve, communicate their ideas across disciplines and even create their own jobs in some instances, as the labour market is shifting and automation is expected to make some skills obsolete. Against this background, students at USC in courses in business, journalism and design have asked for more authentic learning experiences that incorporates industry innovations into their university education. In response to student suggestions this presentation showcases the curriculum innovation in Startup LaunchLab, a multi-disciplinary entrepreneurship courses that provides students with an authentic learning entrepreneurship education experience, incorporating co-working and digital trends, into a credit bearing course. Experiential entrepreneurship empowers graduates to be confident, innovative, proactive and ready to create the future in emerging sectors. Startup LaunchLab's approach consists of preparing students for an intense experiential event through various scaffolded learning activities over seven weeks, then students participate in Startup Weekend, an intense 54 hour event where they form teams and create startups and finally the course concludes through a Reflection and What's next? action learning process. Students find this learning experience as 'the best course I did at uni…'; 'learnt more than I thought was possible…' and 'I know so many people now that I can as for career or industry advice…' - impacting their career skills and approach to problem-solving. The implications of our approach for other programs will be outlined and tips will be shared from the multi-disciplinary group of educators involved. Authentic, intensive learning experiences for which students are well prepared, and debriefed afterwards provide a solution to developing work-ready, entrepreneurial, resilient graduates who are future-focused.
