Background
Complex clinical environments require healthcare professionals to work autonomously and collaboratively. Although tertiary education providers are committed to preparing health graduates to work in multidisciplinary teams, education is generally delivered within a specific discipline. Education faculty require skills to conduct IPE and foster IPCP in the workplace, however, development of cross-sectoral IPE is challenging, particularly in new collaborations. Challenges include lack of uniform organisational structures, uni-professional education silos and limited understanding of the need for specific education and facilitation skills in IPE.
Aim
The aim of this research was to develop a suite of IPE-4-IPCP online learning modules to accelerate IPE and IPCP across the four intersectoral partner organisations of the Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI), Australia via a unified and consistent approach.
Method
The development of the IPE-4-IPCP online learning modules was informed by four scoping reviews focused on the design, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of IPE, and IPE expert interviews to establish evidence for best practice.
Results
The first IPE-4-IPCP module provides an overview of IPE and IPCP to establish a common IPCP competency framework intended for all staff and students of the SCHI partners. Four subsequent IPE-4-IPCP modules focus on the development of IPE expertise for staff with teaching roles and address the IPE domains of design, implementation, assessment, and evaluation. The content validity of the five IPE-4-IPCP modules was assessed using adapted response scales and three participant groups; an expert panel group, health care staff group and health education faculty group. These results have informed further refinement of these modules.
Conclusion
Development of cross-sectoral IPE is demanding, particularly in an intersectoral partnership. Interprofessional faculty development needs to underpin the reorientation of cross sectoral health professional education. This presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities in the development of IPE-4-IPCP modules across an intersectoral partnership.
