Abstract

Public Health and Health Services Health Promotion collegial learning strategy
This paper describes and critically reflects on participants' experiences of an ongoing collegial learning strategy designed to facilitate and support public health and health promotion students undertaking research projects at undergraduate, honours and masters levels. This learning set commenced in Semester 2, 2006 and is now in its second cycle. The learning set is held each week and runs for approximately 3 hours. Essentially it involves students coming together with their supervisors to critically reflect on their work for the dual purposes of learning about research and progressing their research projects. The supervisors facilitate the learning set process and contribute content and process knowledge and expertise as appropriate. Theoretical foundations that underpin and guide this ongoing learning set process include the pedagogy of collegiality, action research and participatory action research methodologies and strategic questioning and critical reflection methods. The form of communication used in the learning set process is structured reflective dialogue or conversation.
