Abstract

Tourism tourism-based community development conflict analysis Satoyama Harie district Japan
This article aims to analyze the reasons for the conflict among residents of the Harie district, identified as a "Satoyama", "Original Scenery of Japan" and "Ultimate Japan" from both inside and outside of Japan. Harie is regarded as an example of a successful region of tourism based community development. Six field work studies from 2010 to 2014 were carried out using semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Conflict we found to be able to be categorized into four types based on different actors: 1) Between the Committee of Harie Shozu Village members and other residents, 2) Between the Committee of Harie Shozu Village members and neighborhood self-governing body of Harie district members (Board members of Harie District), 3) Between original residents and new comers, and 4) Among Committee of Harie Shozu Village members. The study concludes with recommendations for research and practice in tourism based community development from critical perspective.
