Abstract
An action research method has been utilised to investigate the reasons behind a lack of engagement with, and non-completion of, tasks in all components of a second year physiology class. A survey was completed by a subpopulation of 38 students and used to evaluate the two aspects identified along with their opinions and perceptions of the relevance/importance of set tasks. A post laboratory quiz was used to assess their understanding of concepts. The mean score in the quiz was 7.9 (SD = 2.4), with that of mature age students significantly higher than school leavers (p=0.02). 61 percent of students did not complete all practical tasks, with lack of resources and motivation the main reasons reported as causal, while 87 percent agreed they would be more likely to complete practical tasks and preparatory work if they were assessed. Reflections on the study have resulted in a review of the course delivery for cycle two of the action research aiming to improve student engagement and facilitate attainment of learning outcomes.
