Abstract

Public Health and Health Services Queensland Health sleep health clinic information systems research
The project is investigating how information system information gathering and decision support systems can be used to support a sleep specialist to conduct a time efficient consultation that includes the patient in decision making and supports a final diagnosis by the physician. The project was carried out within Queensland Health at a sleep health clinic in Brisbane with assistance from a sleep specialist from another clinic and a psychologist specialising in sleep. The project is a result of a ARC grant. Sleep disorders have traditionally been under diagnosed by a primary physician, with only those patients who are very symptomatic being referred to sleep specialists. There has been increased awareness of sleep disorders among physician's and the wider community imposing an increased burden of disease on the current health system, leading to a shortage of sleep specialists. A qualitative study which lead to the design and evaluation of online tools for use by the physicians and patients. A participative approach with the physicians and psychologist was taken to ensure the production of a relevant tools which could be integrated into the workflow of the user. The result of the study will facilitate effective communication between the patient and physician by increasing the physician's knowledge of patient history at a consultation hence a physician is able to focus more on increasing a patients understanding of their condition rather than information gathering. Giving the patient online tools to increase the patients understanding of their chronic condition which as the treatment involves self-management is critical.
