Abstract
Objectives: Current research using the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised (MIQ-R, Martin & Hall, 1997) suggests that the relationship between imagery ability and imagery use as measured using the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ, Hall et al., 1998) is present only for cognitive specific aspects of imagery use (Gregg et al., 2005). A possible reason given for this result is that the MIQ-R was designed to assess imagery for specific movements and not motivational functions of imagery use. We investigated whether a similar relationship existed when using the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire (VMIQ., Isaac et al., 1986). Design: A quantitative approach was employed. Methods: Pre-elite sport performers (N = 152) were recruited from either team or individual sports (M = 21 years; SD = 7.00). Participants completed both the SIQ and VMIQ. Two-tailed Pearson bi-variate correlations set at (p < 0.05) were used. Results: Significant relationships were found between imagery use and imagery ability for the cognitive functions of the SIQ. The visual sub-scale of the VMIQ correlated with the SIQ sub-scales of Cognitive specific (CS) r = -0.23 and Cognitive general (CG) r = -0.22 imagery. The kinaesthetic VMIQ scale demonstrated significant correlations with CS imagery, r = -0.26. Conclusion: The results indicate that the VMIQ and MIQ-R are similar in recording this type of relationship and could be used in parallel. Further research is needed to determine if psychometric design is the most salient mediator. [Poster Presentation]
