Abstract

Public Health and Health Services
Aim: This paper combines diversity and occupational balance, and professional development, seeking to empower occupational development among occupational therapists involved in pursuing postgraduate research. Method: It tells of the trials, tribulations and triumphs experienced by three doctoral candidates during their qualitative research journey. Findings: Each candidate shared common threads of occupational therapy, qualitative research and motherhood. Their research evolved from integral occupational experiences of professional practice and personal passion to pursue their specific subjects based on human rights, adversity, occupational justice and occupational potential. Conclusion: This paper presents the emotions of the research journey, immersed in reflexive practice. It encourages occupational therapists, through creative reflection, to take time to adopt self-focused practice and develop their reflexive processes, utilising reflexivity tools that best meet diverse individual needs. It provides pragmatic solutions to get the balance right, enabling positive and powerful thinking to feel the fear and do it anyway.
