Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education Psychology
A mixed-methods approach was used to explore caregivers' attitudes towards Internet use by people with intellectual disability. 195 caregivers from across Australia completed an online survey and 20 caregivers participated in telephone interviews to discuss their experiences. The data indicate people with intellectual disability who use the Internet usually do so for entertainment purposes, far fewer use it for practical tasks such as managing finances or accessing services. Caregivers perceive the person they care for is most likely to be at risk of being told unpleasant things, being insulted online, or spending too much time online.
