Abstract

Public Health and Health Services
Aims & rationale/Objectives: It is assumed that the integration of evidence into practice automatically occurs following the publication of an evidence based review/ systematic review, research or clinical guidelines. There still exists an ongoing gap between research and practice. The aim of this study is to identify the barriers in the translation of evidence into practice amongst allied health clinicians in Queensland. Methods: The study consisted of 2 phases: Phase one involved surveying Queensland experts on barriers to the integration of evidence to be. The group included 2 State wide Networks; three Allied Health Director Groups; Multidisciplinery State wide Evidence Based Practice Interest Group and State wide Allied Health EBP Group (AHEBP Group). The second phase involved surveying 69 allied health clinicians who have submitted reviews to the AHEBP Group. The clinicians reported on perceived barriers in the uptake of the evidence including any change in practice following their review. Both surveys consisted of likhert scales with some open ended questions requiring thematic analysis. Descriptive data, including appropriate bivariate tests were used. Principal findings: 97 responses were received from phase one, with a response rate of 60.4%( Completed surveys) for phase two. Both groups shared similar thoughts around the barriers, several supported by the literature. Examples included other clinicians resistance to change and lack of financial supports. Some interesting helpful factors have also been recommended like training programs. Implications: By identifying these barriers, strategies on dissemination and implementation of evidence based reviews may be developed.
