Abstract
In today's learning and teaching environment assessment is essential in making students' experience a positive one. There is qualitative and quantitative research to suggest that a well designed assessment of learning task enables learners to use assessment for and as learning. This poster looks into balancing these three domains: assessment of, for and as learning. A central theme is also about finding the balance between effective and efficient assessment for both students and staff in all three domains. This poster emphasises the idea that what is working for the students is paramount in order for the assessment to be effective (i.e. students to achieve the intended learning outcomes) and enjoyable (i.e. a learning journey). It is also important to remind ourselves what the students are looking for in order for the assessment to be engaging and empowering. Particularly, students are looking towards improving their learning, having assignments that fit with their goals, having a social life, graduating, getting employment. Assessment should therefore be an authentic representation of the intended learning outcomes and fit for purpose. Likewise, it is important to remind students that they are also assessed to learn. Assessment practices are to be viewed in conjunction with the feedback which should be mostly formative, 'developmental' rather than summative, 'judgemental'. Not lastly, the link between assessment and curriculum design in terms of type of knowledge to be achieved and various teaching approaches is emphasised. Finally, the proposition that assessment tasks should be inclusive and considered at the institutional level, discipline specific areas, job prospects and peers collaborations is carefully considered in light of the available time and resources.
