Abstract

research data management RDM university research data storage survey
Following rapid growth of research activity at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), increased demand has been placed on our existing research data management services, including storage and analysis tools. As a growing research institution, it is essential that USC understands its research data needs so we can plan for the future. In November 2014 a survey was sent out to a selection of researchers and all HDR students asking for feedback on existing services and practices, as well as any pain points. The aim of the survey was to gain an understanding of the research data needs of our research community to inform new initiatives for research data management infrastructure and help USC to be prepared in the longer term. Sent to 114 researchers for a total of 282 projects, the survey received a 41% response rate. While some responses were as expected, there were some surprises in terms of research data management practices at USC. The survey showed us some areas definitely in need of improvement particularly in terms of education for researchers, students and administrative support staff. From analysis of the survey results, USC is in a more informed position to understand our researchers’ needs for moving forward in the eResearch space.
