Abstract

Information Systems digital mindset skills literacy culture
Heralded as one of the greatest influences on society, the 15th century invention of the printing press enabled literacy to reach the masses. Fast forward to the 21st century, Internet and Smartphones enable digital literacy to reach billions of individuals worldwide. However, despite technology being ubiquitous, it is changing at an unprecedented rate, significantly impacting the capacity of individuals to adapt. To thrive in this new digital landscape individuals need not only to be digitally literate with a range of digital skills, they must also develop a digital mindset to embrace emerging technologies and workplace change. This concept paper explores the imperative for individuals to develop a digital mindset in order to be productive in a digital economy. Children in schools now are our workforce of the future and potentially the generation most at risk. It is crucial to ensure teachers, especially those working with children in the early years, not only have the digital skills but also develop a digital mindset suitable to prepare children for jobs not yet created. A mixed study of surveys and interviews is planned to investigate current perceptions of digital mindset. This research will explore how mindset impacts on acquiring the digital literacy and skills needed to increase proficiency in future focussed job roles. Data gathered will attempt to inform, evaluate and define digital mindsets. While this study will focus on teacher perspectives it could easily be replicated with participants in business contexts. Digital mindset underpins the building of digital culture in organisations striving to remain competitive through an era of digital transformation.
