Abstract
The demand for sustainable roads using alternative materials in construction has grown in recent years, with crumb rubber used as binder extender/ modifier and glass as partial aggregate replacement – with associated performance enhancing properties. More recently binder modification with polymers from recycled plastic has seen a growth in popularity due to resulting improvements in asphalt performance and associated environmental benefits. The effects of a commercially available plastic modifier produced from industrial waste (known as MR6) were compared to a similar modifier manufactured from municipal plastic waste (known as MR6*). Laboratory testing of asphalt mixtures modified with MR6 and MR6* was conducted against an unmodified control. Waste plastic modification was associated with a significant improvement in rutting resistance and increase in indirect tensile strength, and a general improvement in binder properties. The effects of MR6 and MR6* were comparable. It was concluded that household waste plastics can be used in asphalt modification to improve the engineering properties of asphalt and subsequently roads.
