Abstract

Tourism heritage culture Asia socialist
This paper conceptualizes the process of binding of ideological legitimation and economic development with tourism at designated world heritage sites in an Asian socialist country, Vietnam. With Thang Long Citadel and Hue Complex of Monuments being case studies, the authors analyze the symbiosis of cultural heritage and tourism development in a context of a socialist country where narratives of the heritage sites are manifested by ideological standpoint of the country's political leaders. Tourism development at the two sites also reflects an Asian concept of cultural heritage as living and flow everyday culture. The interactions between elements of identity, marketing, development and conservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the context of a socialist country, are then integrated a research model for further investigation.
