Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse four focus groups that explored the lived experience of life with and without environmental controls (ECS) for persons with high cervical spinal cord injury. Findings revealed themes of autonomy, freedom, safety, time alone, and relationship. These experiences offer useful insights for both users and practitioners in the field of assistive technology.
