Abstract

Curriculum and Pedagogy Other Education flipped-SKIM model professional development activities teaching staff first year higher education University of the Sunshine Coast COR109 Communication and Thought retention sessional staff
The flipped-SKIM model is a framework for the management and delivery of professional development activities for teaching staff in a large foundational first year university course. The model outlines semester-long activities that are employed in the course COR109 Communication and Thought at the University of the Sunshine Coast. It strategically provides teaching staff with professional development opportunities that are in line with pressure points students are likely to encounter during the semester. The aim is to support staff and to improve consistency of teaching practice. The paper proposes an initial discussion around the flipped-SKIM model as a template that could be used in first-year courses to strategically incorporate professional development activities that can improve the first-year experience of university students, and support sessional staff development and wellbeing. The long term goal would be to foster the retention and development of both staff and students.
