Abstract
The DeLorean project provides opportunities for Year 10 students to negotiate and implement their own learning projects with the aim of developing 21 st Century capabilities and skills. These opportunities include the option to engage in a research project on a university campus under the guidance of a PhD student. The partnerships between Year 10 students and PhD students utilise the zone of proximal development to support the Year 10 students' subject knowledge, research skills, and preparation for transition to university. The zone of proximal development can be conceptualised as the spatial and temporal distance between individual performance and assisted performance where assistance is provided by a more experienced and knowledgeable person, in this case the PhD student. The DeLorean Project's use of the zone of proximal development demonstrates the positive impact scaffolded activities and social interactions can have on preparedness for higher education.
