Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education
This paper outlines some of the major changes and challenges to teacher education ('training") in Special Education across the USA and Australia. It examines the impact of major influences such as educational reform, inclusive education, new international agreements, legislation policies and practices, and changes to the concepts of what is 'special' about Special Education. It will also describe the recognition of new groups of children who are disadvantaged by poverty, cultural and linguistic differences, mental health conditions, communication and language problems, ASD and children traumatised through their refugee and asylum status. The presentation examines some current models and projects designed to establish effective curriculum differentiation for the needs of children with "special" needs and how these students may achieve greater levels of engagement within their communities.
