Abstract
This paper reviews the core conceptualizations of Bowen’s multigenerational systems theory with a view to exploring the nature and importance of his central notion, that of the differentiation of self. Differentiation of self and its constitutive factors are examined and two new factors are proffered, societal expectations and tolerating interpersonal difference. These two new factors are discussed in the light of their relevance to understanding the differentiation of self from a collectivist cultural perspective.
