Abstract

Information Systems loneliness social isolation synchronous/asynchronous communications
This research looks at the use of two modes of Internet enabled communications using three social media platforms to help counter social isolation and loneliness amongst the elderly. Synchronous and asynchronous modes of communication were used using two established platforms (Skype and Facebook) and one platform specifically developed for the research. This developed platform was called Seniors online conversation space (SOCS). There were 21 participants who were over 65 and were placed within a social media usage group based upon a self-selected level of computer skill. The participants had a pre and post interview, as a result of these interviews seven themes were identified. They were training preferences, enjoyment benefit, shared interests, connection, sharing, technology and rate of change, security and motivation.
