Abstract

Public Health and Health Services wheeled mobility standards Research product safety
Standards have been guiding wheelchair developments for several decades, and more recently the broader assistive technology field. Standards documents are developed to be unambiguous, broad in application and deal mainly with the basics - so they don't make exciting reading for most. Yet the tendency to develop new guidelines or specifications for products in response to failures or injury to users (as has recently happened in the mobility scooter sector) often ignores the substantial knowledge and research that already exists for guiding manufacturers and users. This presentation will outline some of the significant improvements that have occurred in recent years to national and international standards to not only protect users but also make a product that achieves the desired clinical and/or lifestyle outcomes.
