Abstract
An organisation implements an Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) in order to generate process innovations. However these implementations alter work practices which are often perceived by professionals as undermining their traditional autonomy and status. Reactions by professionals to the introduction of ERP systems have ranged from enthusiastic support through to outright rejection with several variations in between. This paper posits that because ERP implementations frequently run into difficulties, paying greater attention to the needs and reactions of professionals can enhance implementation. Conversely, ignoring them is likely to increase resistance to change.
