Abstract
This research study reports on 204 pre-service teachers’ abilities to complete a number of numeracy tasks. The pre-service secondary teachers who participated in this research study were enrolled in a Professional Masters of Education (PME) programme in three different universities in Ireland, studying a variety of different subjects. The rationale for our research was that numeracy capabilities are an essential part of daily life and are important competencies required by everyone in order to engage fully in society (Goos et al., 2019). Governments and policymakers around the globe have advocated that numeracy is a lifelong skill that students should develop in school. In Ireland, the Department of Education and Skills (DES) and the Teaching Council of Ireland have specified that all teachers are required to support the development of numeracy across the school curriculum (Department of Education and Skills [DES], 2011; DES, 2016; Teaching Council of Ireland, 2020). This is in an effort to ensure that the young people of Ireland have the necessary numeracy skills required to participate in the ever changing society that we live in. Forgasz et al. (2020) argue that pre-service teachers need to possess a certain level of numeracy capabilities themselves, prior to teaching numeracy across the curriculum. Despite this requirement, there has been little evidence that shows how numerate our pre-service teachers are.
