Abstract
The application of physiological technologies for measurement of emotion is emerging in prominence in the tourism field. Subsequently, research on the benefits and limitations of applying physiological and self-report methods to measure emotions are beginning to generate substantive debate in the tourism literature. This paper outlines the benefits and limitations of each approach in a four-cell matrix based on a pilot study using four key methods; specifically, FaceReader, skin conductance, self-report surveys and post hoc interviews. This paper highlights the importance of physiological techniques in combination with self-report surveys and post hoc interviews to provide a more nuanced understanding of emotional experiences. This manuscript adds value to tourism literature by investigating the use of physiological and self-report methods of emotion to guide future scholarly inquiry into emotion.
