Abstract
Curriculum reform in many countries has promoted a cross-curricular or interdisciplinary approach to numeracy development. However, much work still needs to be done on conceptualising numeracy and providing practical support for teachers in terms of curriculum planning, task design, and pedagogical strategies. This lecture draws on research and professional development projects conducted in Australia and Ireland that helped teachers to plan and implement numeracy strategies across the school curriculum. This approach recognises numeracy opportunities that arise naturally in subjects other than mathematics, thus avoiding some of the challenges of creating an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates two or more subjects.
