Abstract
In this paper we introduce a generic approach to dynamical modelling of power systems with symmetrical and asymmetrical faults in their transmission networks. Symmetrical components analysis is incorporated into the dynamics of the generating units (a generating unit comprises a eighth order nonlinear model of a synchronous generator, a third order IEEE exciter, and a third order IEEE turbine and speed-governing system) feeding the networks. It is shown through simulation that the model reflects the physical behaviour of the power system under normal as well as fault conditions.
