Abstract
Recently, solid state transformer (SST) is gaining popularity as a replacement to the conventional bulky 50 Hz transformers because of its superior features such as smaller size, fast control, improved power quality and some additional functionalities. This paper presents the modeling and control of an SST interfaced permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind energy conversion system (WECS) with maximum power extraction and active/reactive power control functions. In order to mitigate the high frequency harmonic distortions, an alternative design approach for the LCL filter has been presented which reduces the design complexity. The critical filter parameters are studied and incorporated in the design approach and proper damping technique is introduced to eliminate the filter resonance. The proposed system and associated controllers are simulated in Matlab/Simulink as well as experimentally implemented in the dSpace DSP system. Simulation and experimental results confirm that SST interfaced WECS performs well under steady-state as well as dynamic conditions and efficacy of the designed LCL filter.
