The increasing functionality of mobile phones, together with their capability of ready access to the Internet leads educators to deliver content to a mobile phone. Content regardless of the delivery mechanism, is delivered in modules or 'learning objects'. Over the last decade, research attention has been accorded to the design and development of reusable learning objects regardless of the delivery platform, however until recently, little research has been undertaken in regard to models geared towards effective deployment and utilization of learning objects for delivery on a mobile phone in different contexts, in particular where the context is developing countries. Using design research methodology, this paper presents the development of a UML based model for instantiating applications for deploying and utilizing learning objects on mobile phones in developing countries of Africa.
