Abstract
Tourism is the largest industry of Lord Howe Island. The main drawcard in regards to the tourist popularity of Lord Howe is the natural environment. Pollutants in the form of nutrients may degrade corals, fish and other marine life if flushed into the marine environment. As such, any activities that may reduce the aesthetic quality of the island must be adequately managed. This study assessed ambient dissolved nutrient concentrations within the groundwater of the Lord Howe Island settlement area. It was found that the groundwater beneath the settlement area is acting as a sink for nutrients. The highest nutrient concentrations are found in the northern portion of the settlement area, attributed to larger domestic and tourist population densities. Salt water intrusion was also identified beneath the northern portion of the settlement area, where groundwater over-use is causing a pronounced landward salt water interface.
