Abstract
This paper investigates the operation and control strategies for a hybrid wind-diesel remote area power system (RAPS) with hydrogen-based energy storage. Detailed models of the main components of the system have been presented and different control systems have be proposed to achieve the maximum utilisation of the wind energy and thus reducing the reliance on diesel energy. Two energy storage systems have been implemented for short term purposes based on battery, and for long term purposes based on electrolyser and fuel cells. The performance of the proposed hybrid RAPS system under continuously varying wind and fluctuating load conditions has been explored and results are presented.
