Abstract

Business and Management
For communities, change is inevitable, making the need for planning strategies to recognise and accommodate for the inescapability of change. 'Resilience' recognises the vulnerabilities of a community, and enables action to be undertaken to address different forces of change. However, resilience thinking within communities is limited and specific in its application, focusing on abrupt disturbances, such as natural disasters. This paper considers the application of resilience to address the gradual forces of change that community's face, stimulated by tourism. The concept of resilience will be critically examined, specifically pertaining to community resilience, and a conceptual framework will outline how resilience can be established within tourism destination communities. The framework will capture the key dimensions and the process of moving towards community resilience. Building resilience for tourism destination communities can aid in understanding the complexity of the community setting, enabling further investigation into the resilience of different community groups.
