Abstract
The growth of the gaming industry in Victoria has led to an increase in gaming revenues and an apparent increase in gambling related problems. This juxtaposition has exposed weaknesses in the current regulations and controls on the industry and indicates the need for urgent reforms if the harm from problem gambling is to be minimised. A number of reforms are recommended including amendments to existing legislation, specification of the use of proceeds collected in the Community Support Fund, development of codes on advertising, implementation of a gaming venue accreditation scheme, alterations to the physical design of venues, addressing underage gambling including the development of school curriculum materials. These reforms and research priorities are discussed drawing on examples from Victoria.
