Abstract
The concept of applied learning has evolved from the notion of a practical 'hands on' learning experience to a broader definition, which includes a contextualised learning environment. Applied learning strategies are often acknowledged as being able to provide opportunities for learners to develop the key skills and knowledge required for future careers in industry and further education. This paper details the design and development of the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Design offered at the University of Canberra. In particular, it discusses the strategic approach towards curriculum design chosen to best facilitate work integrated learning and industry-based learning experiences. Through examining the application of theoretical concepts and existing principles of applied learning, the paper provides insight into how the implemented strategies have impacted upon student experience. The study illuminates implications for both teachers and learners in an applied learning environment designed specifically for careers in video games and interactive design.
