Abstract
This paper provides a comprehensive model of a generating unit connected to an infinite bus through double line transmission network. The generating unit comprises a 8th order synchronous generator, a third order IEEE type 1S exciter and a steam-turbine speed governor. The novelty of the model is the inclusion of possible faults along either of the two lines. This model is then used in Part II to design a fault filter which is able to detect the occurrence of faults in real time. Simulation results are presented to confirm the validity of the derived model.
