Development of an Airport Spray Seal Design Method

Abstract
There is no national or other broadly recognised design method for spray sealing of airport pavements in Australia. To address this, the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) is planning to publish an Airport Spray Seal Design Guide as well as an industry-based specification for airport spray seal construction. These documents will draw on the existing Austroads guide to the design of spray seals for road pavements and the traditional specification for airport spray sealing. The development and requirements of the AAPA design method are presented as well as some commentary on the selection of treatments and construction aspects. The draft guide will be verified by inspection and assessment of various recent and future sprayed seals and comparison against experience-based bitumen application and aggregate spread rates, as well as the rates determined using the draft guide.
