Abstract

Aircraft overloads are an important element of any airport pavement management system. Although the international airport pavement strength rating system is robust, the associated guidance regarding the effect of overloads is currently too basic. This research extended work performed previously, in a practical manner, to estimate the effect of overloads on the theoretical structural life of flexible and rigid airport pavements, as a function of pavement type, aircraft wheel configuration, number of aircraft load repetitions in the pavement design, and the subgrade bearing capacity. The outcome is a simple tabular or graphical approximation of the impact of pavement overload operations, and it is recommended that airport managers and engineers use these tools to better manage pavement overload requests in the future
