Abstract

Tourism tourism management street art public spaces city planning public art
Forms of street art have been embraced by local government authorities around the world as a strategy to foster urban tourism. Often considered as a public good and a vehicle to beautify and revitalise neglected parts of the city, the potentially conflicting roles of street art as a vehicle for artistic expression and source of local pride and sense of place have not been adequately conceptualised. This paper outlines the multiple and potentially conflicting roles of street art in urban tourism within a wider framework of place. Such a broader conceptualisation of street art enables the multiple stakeholders to be identified, their interests recognised and could offer the foundation for encouraging constructive dialogue among the broad range of roles and stakeholders involved in a given urban context.
