Abstract
This paper uses rainbow looms as the leisure activity of interest. Rainbow looms take their name after coloured rubber bands that can be weaved into intricate items (e.g. necklaces, bracelets) through the use of a plastic loom. As a craft sold without any accompanying instructions, owners of rainbow looms often experiment or consult others to advance one's proficiency. Using the overarching framework of digitally-mediated leisure, rainbow loom activity was analysed through eight blogs and 34 YouTube videos. The findings revealed that digitally-mediated rainbow loom leisure provided four positive outcomes. These include: A safe and conducive environment to hone one's skills, idea generation and innovation, developing perseverance, and social inclusiveness. Collectively, these outcomes provide some empirical insights to suggest that digitally-mediatised leisure go beyond hedonic pursuits.
