Abstract
Highly polymer modified binder (PMB) is commonly used for airport asphalt resurfacing, but is prone to segregation during hot transportation from the point of manufacture to the on-site asphalt production plant. Based on data mined from a real runway resurfacing project, this research analyzed the effect of remixing segregated PMB, in both a low shear mixer and a high shear mill, on the PMB properties commonly measured as part of the quality assurance processes, as well as the practical impact on the asphalt surface. It was concluded that segregated PMB should not be remixed in low shear mixers. It was also concluded that there was no ongoing detrimental effect associated with the remixed on segregated PMB at the PMB production plant, as long as the cause of the original segregation is identified, resolved and not repeated.
