Abstract
Using data mined from a runway resurfacing project, the deformation resistance, moisture damage resistance and Marshall properties were compared for a dense graded asphalt mixture, with and without liquid anti-stripping agent (ASA). It was found that the ASA had no significant effect on the deformation resistance, moisture damage resistance or the Marshall Flow. In contrast, the Marshall Stability was significantly lower with ASA. Using typical financial cost and embodied carbon rates, it was also determined that the ASA contributed 2.2% of the financial cost and 1.7% of the embodied carbon in the asphalt mixture. In light of there being no performance improvement for this particular asphalt mixture, it was concluded that ASAs should only be added when required, and not as a standard element of asphalt mixture design.
