Abstract

Cementitious stabilization of fine crushed rock and natural gravel granular materials is a common part of pavement construction and rehabilitation. These materials are usually controlled by measuring the unconfined compression strength (UCS), which can range from <1 MPa(lightly modified) to more than 10 MPa (heavily bound). The UCS can be measured on soaked or unsoaked specimens after a period of controlled curing, but the soaking of lightly modified materials has been questioned. This research analysed the effect of soaking on the UCS of 78cementitiously stabilized materials, including three granular materials, two binder types, and binder contents ranging from 2% to 5%. It was concluded that soaking reduced the average UCS by 26% and that the unsoaked UCS was the only significant factor affecting the degree of UCS reduction. It was recommended that in the future, cementitiously stabilized granular materials not be soaked prior to UCS testing.
